Walking every day throughout June in the award-winning gardens of our care home in Chingford and the beautiful surrounding countryside, our residents clocked up 166,502 steps, equalling 70 miles!
Together they raised over £800 for local charity, Hands On Hand Out, which charity founder, Justine Pillar says will go to great use: “We really can’t thank everyone involved enough. The money raised will go towards food, underwear, toiletries and treats for the homeless. These are things we all take for granted but are invaluable to our homeless friends – they make life a little easier and show them that people care.”
The Jubilee Walk was the inspiration of our lifestyle co-ordinator Silvia, who walked every day with residents. She shares: “The residents have loved this challenge and the sense of achievement it has brought. We want our residents to live happy and fulfilled lives and maintain their independence, so this challenge was perfect. We plan to keep up our daily walks as everyone has really felt the benefits.”
Two of our residents, Judith and Ann, who walked furthest during the challenge shared how they are feeling: “I am not normally a walker” says Judith, “but it was an awakening for me. I walked in rain and shine and found it very exciting.” Ann adds: “I used to walk a lot with my husband and this challenge brought me good memories. I loved all the walks we did and the good company we had.”
Huge congratulations to our intrepid walkers! We are so proud of them all.
