“Sea-nic” views and the wind in her hair bring back salty-sharp memories for 87-year-old sailor

Meet Pamela Goodman, an incredible 87-year-old resident at Brooklands Care Home in Norwich, whose love for sailing has been reignited by our team.

Pamela’s passion for sailing began at the tender age of ten, and recently, she had the chance to relive those cherished memories with a visit to the accessible sailing charity, The Nancy Oldfield Trust.

Pamela set sail on a cruiser and even had the joy of reuniting with old friends from the nearby Horning Sailing Club, where she was a proud member for 20 years. “The whole day was like stepping back into my youth,” said Pamela.

“I used to love racing. When you get the wind behind you, you sit on the boat in front and then nip round them and steal their wind, and that’s how you win.” Pamela’s sailing prowess led her to numerous victories, both in club races and on a national level, with her beloved boat named “Solitaire.”

Our Lifestyles Coordinator, Jamie Willimott, and Home Manager, Karen Willimott, joined Pamela on a Yeoman sailing boat along the picturesque River Ant, where she took the helm and the tiller.

“Pamela’s journey back to the water exemplifies the importance of creating new memories while revisiting cherished ones, which is something that is incredibly important to us,” said Karen.

“It was so special to see firsthand how much it meant to Pamela, and she hasn’t stopped smiling since she got back.

“We’re looking forward to hearing even more stories about her day on the water and all those race wins!”
