Living Well with Dementia

Bert (91) was diagnosed with dementia in his 80’s and has lived at Acorn Court since 2014.

Whilst his mobility and general health have declined in recent years, Bert’s zest for life hasn’t!

Bert, with the help of Acorn’s care team, still enjoys a fulfilled life. Time in the garden, bird watching and feeding the fish are just some of the things Bert enjoys in the home.

The great-grandfather is also a regular participant at Little Acorns, the weekly interactive play sessions for toddlers and residents, where he cherishes the time he spends with the children who bring much joy to his life. Bert comments: “I love it here. I’m very happy and the team are so kind.”

Acorn is such a special place and they go out of their way to look after dad. We wouldn’t want him anywhere else.

Meaningful activities designed to combat memory loss and promote mobility are routine at Acorn Court.  Aids, such as talking ‘memory books’ are given to residents to prompt conversations.

This is testament to Home Manager Monica Prosser, who having won The Caring Times Dementia Care Manager of the Year award is passionate about delivering exceptional dementia care.

Monica comments: “Every resident living with dementia is unique so we ensure their care is personalised. By creating the right environment, we aim to minimise anxiety and promote overall health and wellbeing. Everyone feels part of our big family. I love the fact that we make a difference to the lives of our residents, and their friends and families as well.”

There are currently around 850,000 people in the UK with dementia. To book a place on our Understanding Dementia seminar on Tuesday 19th June 2018 call 01737 339 666 or email Lifestyle.Acorn@carebase.org.uk.
