On Friday 19th October Acorn Court Care Home was presented with a prize of £1,000 by star actor and TV presenter, Christopher Biggins.

The home is the winner of an inter-home competition which challenged the 13 homes in Acorn Court’s group to come up with new, creative and meaningful activities for their residents.

Acorn Court’s response to this challenge was to introduce ‘Little Acorns’ – weekly classes for pre-reception age children – into the home on a regular basis.

During his visit, the Redhill tots enjoyed some star treatment with Christopher enthusiastically taking part in the class with the children and the residents.

He said: “I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the ‘Little Acorns’ class today and watching the interactions between the children and residents.  It was also very clear that the parents had fun getting out to meet other parents with similar aged children”.

Home manager, Monica Prosser said: “We are thrilled that the home has won this prize and it was very exciting to host Christopher here today.  We are planning to spend our £1,000 on a new sound system for the home and other equipment for the nursery group to further enhance the experience for everyone.”

Christopher Biggins has a particular and very personal interest in care for the elderly.  His 92 year old mother is living with dementia and in 2016 Christopher hosted the Great British Care Awards.

Christopher adds: “It was so heart-warming to see the delight on the residents faces as they interacted with the children. And this project has clearly brought the home closer to the heart of the community.”

Monica adds: “Little Acorns has exceeded our expectations in improving the overall wellbeing of our residents through positive engagement and interaction with young children.  And everyone is benefitting – with less physically able residents enjoying visits from parents and children in their rooms if they so wish”.
