Georgina, who was in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War where she met her husband, said: “Receiving all these cards is amazing, but it’ll take me another 100 years to read them all!”
The cards were created by 11-12 year old children at Warlingham School, as part of the Postcards of Kindness initiative run by Age UK.
The idea behind the scheme is for people in the community to write cards and postcards to care home residents across the UK to “bring joy and spark lively conversations among older people who receive them”.
Asked the secret to her longevity, Georgina, who turned 100 on December 21, said: “Laughter is the best medicine – I don’t take anything too seriously.”
Ami Higgins, Care Service Manager, said: “We were absolutely delighted to receive so many wonderful cards and messages from the students at Warlingham School to celebrate our dearest Georgina’s 100th birthday.
“It’s so important that children remain connected with our older generation and the messages they wrote were so heart-warming to read, some quite cheeky also which brought a smile to ours and Georgina’s face.”
Paul Foster, Warlingham School headteacher, said: “At Warlingham School & Sixth Form College, we actively seek to provide our students with opportunities to support the wider community, so we were delighted to work with Acorn Court Care Home to commemorate Georgina’s milestone 100th birthday.
“Kindness is one of Warlingham’s core values and so we encourage our students to be proactive citizens and to volunteer. We wish Georgina many happy returns and are delighted that she was pleased to receive handmade cards from so many of our students.”
