Bridge House leads charity 'Sewathon' for Sobell House Hospice
Bridge House together with the Mayor of Abingdon, Margaret Crick, challenged themselves to sew a ‘Mile of Memories’ at a fundraising Sewathon on 13th July in support of local hospice Sobell House.
Donations of material with special memories attached had been coming in from the community over the weeks leading up to the event. The material was fashioned into bunting ‘flags’ – just over 10,700 were needed to achieve the mile!
The Abingdon Bowls Club donated a shirt in honour of their former Chairman, Ron Etheridge, a resident of Bridge House. The Abingdon Boys School, who are regular visitors to the home, kindly gave school ties. Abingdon’s Mayor also contributed fabric.
Tim Wraith, Corporate Partnerships Manager from Sobell House added:
Bridge House is a very special place and it’s the people who make it that way. It is a great advert for what good care for the elderly is all about. I think what the team has done is wonderful. We continue to be incredibly grateful for the fantastic support they all give to Sobell House.
The inspiration for the Sewathon came from Sybil Evans, Director of Nursing. Sybil started sewing again after 30 years and enjoys discussing sewing with the residents. A special sewing area has been set up in the home for residents to enjoy.
The project was undertaken in conjunction with ‘Sew Local’ of Witney who donated 19 sewing machines. They team joined to help produce the thousands of flags needed to achieve the mile.
June Maharaj, Home Manager commented:
We were overwhelmed with the enthusiasm from everyone, especially from the community. It was wonderful to see so many people taking part, many of whom had never sewn before. We would like to thank everyone for their support.
Although the team did not quite meet the goal, a sewing machine is still set up in the home to continue until the mile is complete. Throughout August, the Mile of Memories is on display at the Abingdon Community Shop.
