It was full steam ahead for residents at Queen Elizabeth Park as they enjoyed a scenic trip down the river.
The tranquil surroundings of the river provided the perfect backdrop for reminiscence and relaxation as well as being a brand new experience for others.
“I really enjoyed the cruise along the River Wey,” said resident Sheila.
“They do two different routes, and I’ve been fortunate enough to experience both, as I went on one of the cruises last year too. The gentlemen in charge and the staff looked after us very well.
“I’ve been on quite a few boat trips in my time, but one in particular that springs to mind was a journey with my sister to Ireland, where we travelled on the tail of a hurricane!
“My sister and I were the only two of four who had the stomach for breakfast the next morning. I’ve always had a great love for boats and steam trains.”
Some residents from the 77-bed home were embarking on the river cruise, which connects Godalming to the Thames at Weybridge, for the first time.
“We started offering these boat trips about 14 years ago because we’re committed to giving our residents as many diverse and memorable experiences as possible,” said lifestyle coordinator Jackie Avenell.
“The whole trip was just wonderful. Sailing through such a peaceful stretch of the river was so relaxing and it gives you a while new view of the area which is so different to being in a car.
“For some it was a completely new experience, while some were taking a trip down memory lane and revisiting those cherished memories of cruising the rivers.”
The “Swingbridge” River Cruises offer a leisurely journey along the River Wey, providing a serene and accessible way for everyone to enjoy the natural beauty of the local waterways.
Residents enjoyed afternoon tea and cakes while taking in sights such as Millmead Lock, Guildford Town Wharf, Daphne Wharf and St Catherine’s Lock.
Care home manager Heather De-Ninis added: “Outings like this one bring so much joy to our residents.
“It’s not just about taking a trip, it’s about creating opportunities for them to reminisce, share stories, and create new memories.
“There were lots of happy faces when everyone came back and a reminder that you can have new experiences at any stage in life. Everyone is already looking forward to going back next year.”
