A former ballet dancer fulfilled her wish of seeing the ballet again thanks to the team at a Waltham Abbey care home.
Georgette initially asked the team at Ashbrook Court Care Home, on Sewardstone Road, to perform again but her mobility challenges meant that attending a performance was the next best thing.
The live performance of The Children of Step into it Ballet at the Harlow Playhouse brought back cherished memories of performing for Georgette who was left beaming from the experience.
“Dance was always the highlight of my life,” said the 85-year-old.
“I remember how I could once move like the dancers on stage. Watching them brought back so many wonderful memories—it was just beautiful.”
Georgette, who grew up in Paris and fell in love with ballet as a young girl, pursued her passion until the age of 14 when her mother encouraged her to set aside her dancing aspirations for a more traditional career.
Moving to London as a young adult, Georgette worked as a secretary but maintained her connection to dance by attending tea dances, cabarets, and Friday night gatherings at The Savoy with friends.
With the support of the team at the 70-bed home, which provides residential, nursing and dementia care, son Constantin and her granddaughter, Georgette’s wish became a reality.
“When first asked about her dream, Georgette wanted to perform on stage again,” said lifestyle coordinator Lorna Morey.
“While this wasn’t possible, seeing Georgette’s face light up when we mentioned the theatre was priceless. Georgette smiled from ear to ear the whole time.
“She shared stories of her own dancing days and how much ballet meant to her. It was truly a day to remember.”
Georgette’s favourite ballet growing up was Swan Lake and she spent many hours as a child dancing along to the music.
“Georgette is an inspiration to us all”, said care home manager Jonathane Ribiero.
“The fact that she wanted to perform shows how determined she is but being able to attend live was the next best thing.
“We love to get to know our residents individually and find out what they really love in life. This trip was not only just about rekindling old memories, but making new ones and we were delighted to make this wish come true for Georgette.
