Dedicated volunteers are marking over 25 years of combined service at a Surrey care home after being inspired to give back by loved ones who lived at the home.
Doreen Collins, Christine Vincent, and Olivia Ames-Lewis all had relatives living at Queen Elizabeth Park, in Hallowes Close, which provides residential, nursing, respite, specialist dementia and end-of-life care.
The trio have given their time and compassion, enriching the lives of residents and bringing smiles to their faces.
“I started volunteering soon after my mum passed away, and I’ve enjoy every moment of it,” said Doreen, whose mum Elsie Hill lived at the 77-bed home ten years ago.
“I help with a quiz, make tea and coffee, and run a knit and natter group with my cousin. My mum loved to knit, so in a way, I know this is something she would have loved.
“I’m just happy to be here volunteering and making the residents smile.”
Christine’s connection to Queen Elizabeth Park began when her mother, Trudy, was a resident for two years until 2014.
“Visiting my mother for many hours each day gave me an insight into how I could help,” said Christine, who started volunteering in 2013 and continues to play a vital role in the home’s social activities.
“I love spending time with the residents, making refreshments, running activities like bingo, singing, and helping with special events. It gives me a real sense of appreciation.”
Olivia began volunteering after her partner, Reg Trundle, lived at Queen Elizabeth Park in 2019.
“Reg had Parkinson’s, and when he could no longer walk, I wasn’t able to care for him at home,” Olivia said.
“After he passed away, I wanted to come back. I love the kindness and happiness here.
“I visit twice a week to chat with those who may not have family around, and it’s something I truly enjoy—it gets me out of the house and gives me the chance to connect with so many wonderful people.”
Care home manager Heather De-Ninis, praised the volunteers for their dedication and highlighted the importance of volunteers to the team, who were shortlisted for Team of the Year at the Surrey Care Awards in 2024.
“Doreen, Christine, and Olivia are incredible members of our Queen Elizabeth Park family,” she said.
“Their kindness, dedication, and willingness to give their time make such a difference in the lives of our residents.
“The impact of volunteers at our home is really important. They bring a unique set of skills and experiences that complement the wonderful team we have here. We are so grateful for everything they do.”
