Rainbow Halloween Fun

Our extraordinary Halloween display created by residents forms part of Abingdon's Pumpkin Hunt 2020.

The scarecrow couple at the centre of the display was made by residents John (96) and his partner, Edna (95). They were placed in a ‘field’ of pumpkins and rainbows, which were painted by John, a former artist, as a thank you to all the key workers in the local community.

John and Edna have lived together at Bridge House for the past year. They spent many hours carefully crafting the scarecrows and rainbows for the display.

The idea behind the display, which forms part of Abingdon’s Pumpkin Hunt 2020, was to give the children of Abingdon a Halloween half-term treat, when there are restrictions on what children can and cannot do this year.

Local childminder, Fiona Allum, brought five of her charges to the unveiling on 25th October – and each brought a pumpkin to add to the display.

John told us that: “It’s been a wonderfully absorbing project and we hope that all the residents and the children in the community enjoy our display. We have so enjoyed making the scarecrows and the rainbows.”

Over 30 pumpkins were used in the display donated by Waitrose, Peach Croft Farm, Fiona’s Childminding, and relative Ann Southwell.

Lifestyle manager, Chantelle Merritt added: “Our home has strong links with the community in Abingdon and we are so grateful for all the contributions.  The artistic project has really captivated our residents and they are looking forward to seeing local children stop by to enjoy the display over the next week.”
