Abingdon Mayor chooses Bridge House for his last official engagement

Resident Jean was thrilled to accept a request from outgoing Mayor, Cllr. Charlie Birks, to take tea with her to mark the end of his term in office.

The mayor, who is the first since 1953 to serve for two consecutive years, first met Jean (89) when he came to Bridge House to show a film on local history and Jean shared her Abingdon history and photos of her family with him.  This was followed by a special invitation to the Mayor’s Christmas Ball. Jean attended the ball along with six other residents and members of our care team.

Lifestyle Coordinator, Chantelle Merritt said: “They seem to have formed such a special bond.  He has been such a wonderful Mayor and a real friend to the home, attending many of our events and taking a real interest in Jean and in other residents”.

Aside from local history, Jean and Charlie share a love of motorbikes and to Jean’s delight, he arrived for tea on his Suzuki GSX-S 1000 motorbike.

Cllr. Birks said: “Motorcycle enthusiasts are always drawn together – I think it’s our lust for life!”
